Safety Of Women In India

Safety Of Women In India :-

The reason I am here today is to talk about “The safety of women in India” w.r.t to rapes and other inhuman activities that Indian women suffer from today. Even if one circumvents the obviousness of such primitive occurrences during the past history, one is baffled by its presence in modern times boasting of increased awareness, education and feminism. I will also talk about an infamous Rape incident which brought shiver down the spines of many. Well we all know about the brave story of 23 year old girl ‘Nirbhaya’ who was brutally raped by 6 men in our nation’s capital on 16th December 2012.

The girl was finally killed by lethal wounds provided by the rapists; what ever happened to the innocent girl on that night will stay fresh in the hearts of many. Here the question is not for the court to decide on the people found guilty, but the question is for the future of our country, this incident highlights that the country’s social, legal and political condition is not in order.

There are many other facts about the inhuman practices that Indian women have to go thought in this Hippocratic and Orthodox Indian society. Such incidents are not new to the layered history of this country; there are many which will terrify you to the core.

Our history is filled with such crimes, and what is even more terrifying is the fact that the number of rapes have increased two folds between 1990 and 2012.Though the problem is not new to the Indian society, statistics suggests around 1 lac women were kidnapped and raped at the time of partition.

Now the questions to be asked are:-

What India have we built after 6 decades of getting Independent?

Have we done enough for the safety of women in this nation?

When I say “we” I am talking about all of us not a certain set of people who we assume to be making India a better place.

The problem which has devastated Indian women is not just rape but there are other problems too which raise question on the term “Safety of women in India”.

1. Dowry killings
2. Pressurized abortions,
3. Forced pregnancy
4. Forcing for prostitution,
5. Smuggling of women
6. Pregnancy due to rape
7. Sexual slavery and violence
8. Domestic violence

These are not all but few examples of crimes against women which are eating up our society and making it weak day by day. Women in this male chauvinist society are exploited in many ways, one of which is domestic violence; you can easily see many cases of domestic violence in the Indian households, Now the question that should immediately hit you is “if women are not safe in their own households then who can guarantee their safety outside their homes?”

I will talk facts and statistics from here on. The facts that I have collected in a brief period of time and I can assure you that brief time was not easy.

According to a detailed research conducted by National Family Health Survey of India in the year 2006, a very depressing picture of our society was shown, research suggested around 60% of women in India were victims of domestic violence and other sorts of exploitations, and a different survey has suggested that the number rose from 60% to 84%.These researches show the hollow foundation that our country stands on today.

Population survey of 2012 shows that out of 1.22 billion of India’s population almost 0.59 billion are the number of women and out of those 0.59 billionabout 84% are victims of domestic violence or some other form of exploitation. That means out of .59 billion of the total women population .49 billion have to go through a hard time throughout their lives, if this is the case the question I want to ask again is

Q “Is our country moving in the right direction?
A “No!! In my opinion our country is in a state of paralysis which will neither let it stand nor let it fall”

Now who is to be blamed? We have to accept the bitter truth that all of us as individuals are responsible for the condition of our country.I am responsible, our society, our legal and political system is responsible for these horrifying acts of disgust.

Right to justice, freedom, brotherhood and equality are words that everyone is aware of, and these words form the crux of our constitution. In my honest opinion these words have no meaning left to the people of India.Phrases like “WE THE PEOPLE” written in our constitution show that our constitution was formed for the people by the people and for the service of the people. That is exactly what we call a democracy.

Q But is there any respect for what is written in the constitution, can we say that the people are working towards the uplifting of this country??

A No!! The accused of the rape incident that took place in the nation’s capital are of the same country. We all are a part of this country but we find ourselves either as a part of the crime or just as spectators.

It took 2 years 11 months and 18 days to write those 80,000 words of the constitution on which our economic, social and political system stands today. The loopholes of this wordy and vast constitution have been exploited by many to fulfil their greed for money and power.

Many of our political leaders who are elected according to the written constitution are insulting it by their acts of sins like corruption, nepotism, fraud, casual violence etc. whereas they should provide ways for growth and prosperity of the country. Their focus should be to make India a better place to live not only for a certain section of society but for all. These politicians can be compared to termites that are eating the roots of this country and making it shallow from within. These politicians are brought to power by the common man of India crippled by illiteracy and unawareness, totally unaware of these very important aspects.

The terrible incident of Delhi where on one hand a family lost a daughter a sister and on the other hand many took full advantage of the flames of the burning corpses. On one hand where this incident became a big social agenda and a wave of anger flew through the public and on the other hand many played their political games. Today though the accused are behind the bars but will this change the condition of the society? Tomorrow more incidents like these will happen and they are still happening but why is there no control over them?

If the roots are week then it doesn’t matter how big the tree is, a small blow of wind is enough to knock it down, we need to go to the base of the problems and remove them, problems that are eating up the roots of India like a termite. After all we have the right to do it in a democratic system.

But are we democratic enough to fight for what is right and wrong? Well to decide that people should first know what is wright and what is wrong. If people cannot differentiate between the two, then the democratic system is not at fault but the people are.
There are various reasons for the people to be at fault reasons like illiteracy, unawareness and our orthodox society also plays an important role. A large part of the population which is suffering from these diseases is not able enough to understand these problems and instead of stopping them they start contributing in creating them. These incidences will continue unabated unless we identify the sinners before the sin is committed. The sinners (Rapists) are not born in a day but they are troubled minds turned sick. In an exotic mix of inheritance and society, most of these traits emerge during childhood and adolescence. We need to harness those minds before they become unbridled and turn loose.A research suggests that a rapist would be more likely to be driven by the need to compensate for their inadequacy in heterosexual relationships by dominating or controlling their victims to prove their sexual capability.

To make these people better humans education is a very important weapon, only the educated can help improve the economic, social and political condition of this country, if we want to create a fully aware India and if we want to break the locks on the minds been put by the orthodox thinking then education is the key.

But how do we do that?

It is very much achievable. The easiest way that an individual can contribute to improve society is to improve people around them. Share good thoughts and values to people of all ages, casts, religious groups and states. This is the least we can do and I don’t feel anything is above spreading awareness in such cases.

Stop a friends if they are getting into social crimes and try to make them understand about right and wrong; stop your father by putting their hands into corruption or Bribery, tell your brothers to respect people of all ages and sex. Society is the people who surround us and if each of us starts making people better humans we can achieve a lot.

Today this falling building with hollow foundation needs repairing, and for that it’s us the youth who have to come forward, if we all get together we can make a difference and we can save the respect and dignity of our country from being lost.

Come outside the computer games, clubs, pubs, bars and parties you will find a lot of darkness around you and we can all together bring back the light. In this darkness we have to find the light. I know it may take a lot of time to reach the source but giving up is not an option is it??.

Today this country needs an effort and a determination which cannot be weakened or diluted. Today the youth have to come forward so that our next generation can live a peaceful and respectful life without fear.

I’ll stop here with the faith that my words won’t go in vain.

Thank you.
